Analytical methods for peptide identity and purity
No single analytical method answers all quality questions. A reliable assessment combines the right method with a correctly identified sample and clear reporting.
HPLC
High-performance liquid chromatography separates components based on their interaction with a column and mobile phase. The chromatogram may show relative peak areas, but interpretation depends on the method, detector, and sample preparation.
Mass spectrometry
Mass spectrometry measures mass-to-charge ratios and can support the expected molecular mass. A mass match alone does not provide a complete picture of all impurities or microbiological properties.
Assay, identity, and purity
Assay describes how much of a particular component has been measured according to a method. Identity, assay, and purity are related but distinct concepts and should not be used interchangeably.
What a report does not prove
An HPLC or MS report does not automatically prove sterility, freedom from endotoxins, safety, or suitability for human use. Other specific methods and an appropriate regulated context are required for this.
Summary
Good research information begins with a clear question, correct product identification, and transparent documentation. Results should always be assessed within the limitations of the model used and the analytical method selected.
