Aviptadil in severe COVID: what TESICO did and did not show
Study model: Humans; randomized placebo-controlled study
The research question
VIP is a peptide that was tested as aviptadil in COVID research. TESICO investigated the intravenous form in people with severe hypoxemic respiratory problems.
What was found?
The study compared aviptadil with placebo in a randomized study design. The results showed no significant improvement in clinical outcomes. Thus, this study did not confirm a clear benefit for the patients and route of administration investigated.
What does this evidence mean?
This negative result belongs visibly in a complete overview of peptide research into COVID. It concerns acute severe illness, not long-term symptoms after recovery. Moreover, a study of intravenous aviptadil does not automatically provide evidence for other forms of VIP or for an offered research product.
