Elamipretide after a heart attack: the outcome of EMBRACE STEMI
Study model: Humans; randomized phase 2a study
The research question
Protecting mitochondria is an interesting research direction in cardiac injury. EMBRACE STEMI tested whether elamipretide provided a measurable benefit around the treatment of an acute myocardial infarction.
What was found?
In this randomized, double-blind study, intravenous MTP-131 was compared with placebo during reperfusion treatment. The prespecified outcomes showed no convincing improvement. The expected reduction in damage was therefore not confirmed in this clinical setting.
What does this evidence mean?
A biologically plausible mechanism is insufficient to establish a clinical effect. This study does not justify any claim that SS-31 treats or prevents a myocardial infarction.
