LL-37 and SARS-CoV-2: from laboratory signal to research question
Research model: Preclinical; cells and experimental models
The research question
LL-37 has been studied in relation to SARS-CoV-2. The initial question is not whether people recover, but whether an effect can be observed under experimental conditions.
What was found?
This publication reported inhibition of infection in preclinical systems, using cell research and additional experimental models. The findings provide grounds for further investigation of interactions between LL-37 and the virus. No efficacy in COVID patients was established.
What does this evidence mean?
A concentration that works in a laboratory does not necessarily have to be safe or effective in humans. The virus model used also determines how far a conclusion can extend. This study supports research into a mechanism and does not constitute a claim about preventing or treating COVID.
