Nicotinamide riboside in COPD: an inflammatory signal in a small trial
Study design: Humans; double-blind study, 40 participants
The research question
A small COPD study investigated whether nicotinamide riboside affects inflammatory markers. That is a different question from whether damaged lungs recover.
What was found?
Forty people with stable COPD participated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study with six weeks of intervention. The primary sputum marker IL-8 decreased more in the NR group. Blood levels of NAD+ increased; not all other inflammatory measures changed. The study was limited in size, with uncertainty around the estimates.
What does this evidence mean?
A favorable inflammatory marker does not prove a cure for COPD, improved lung function, or fewer exacerbations. Appropriate clinical outcomes and larger follow-up studies are needed for that. The oral NR intervention studied cannot be equated with NAD+ injections.
