Oxytocin and the urge to smoke: a small study of triggers
Study design: Humans; placebo-controlled crossover pilot study, 17 smokers
The research question
Craving for cigarettes can be triggered by images and situations associated with smoking. A small oxytocin pilot study examined this response in a laboratory setting.
What was found?
Seventeen smokers were studied in separate sessions with oxytocin and placebo. The authors reported less smoking-cue-induced craving with intranasal oxytocin. The study examined a short-term response under controlled conditions.
What does this evidence mean?
Less craving during a session is not evidence that people are still abstinent months later. This article describes broader peptide research. The result must not be attributed to Selank, Semax, or other peptides.
