Oxytocin and stress-related smoking cravings: a null result counts too
Study design: Humans; randomized study
The research question
Stress-related cigarette craving is a different research question from craving triggered by smoking cues. An oxytocin study investigated this stress response in daily smokers.
What was found?
The randomized study found no demonstrable reduction in stress-related cigarette craving from intranasal oxytocin. Thus, this trial did not confirm a beneficial effect for the outcome studied. The result differs from the positive signal in the small study on smoking cues.
What does this evidence mean?
Different cues, participants, and measurement times can produce different results. A positive pilot result should therefore be considered alongside a null result. This does not establish a proven method for permanently quitting smoking, nor does it support efficacy claims about other peptides.
