Thymosin beta-4 and TB-500: what has actually been researched?

This Research Library page summarizes independently published research on Thymosin beta-4 / TB-500. For each study, the research model, key finding, and main limitation are provided.

Important distinction: Research on full-length thymosin beta-4 or a specific drug formulation is not automatically evidence for every product sold as TB-500.

Study 1

Evidence level: Animal research

Subject: Epithelial healing and inflammatory responses after alkaline corneal injury.

Key finding: Topical thymosin beta-4 accelerated re-epithelialization and reduced some inflammatory markers.

Main limitation: Mouse model and specific topical ocular application; not automatically applicable to products sold as TB-500.

Study 2

Evidence level: Human research — small case series

Subject: Topical thymosin beta-4 for difficult-to-heal corneal defects.

Key finding: Signs of healing were reported in several patients; not all patients improved.

Main limitation: Very small and unsuitable for establishing efficacy; specific topical formulation.

Study 3

Evidence level: Human research — phase 3 RCT

Subject: 0.1% thymosin beta-4 eye drops for neurotrophic keratopathy.

Key finding: The publication reported results for wound closure and ocular comfort.

Main limitation: Concerns a specific pharmaceutical ophthalmic formulation and indication, not injectable TB-500.
