Level of evidence: Animal study

Research question

Does the short KPV fragment act in the same way as other fragments of α-MSH? The study compares responses in models of peritonitis.

Research model

Among other things, the researchers studied the accumulation of neutrophilic inflammatory cells in the abdominal cavity of mice. Various MSH-related peptides were investigated side by side.

What was found?

KPV reduced the accumulation of inflammatory cells in the models studied. The authors concluded that the effect of this C-terminal fragment differed from that of the central MSH fragments.

Limitations and interpretation

This outcome applies to experimental inflammation in mice. It provides no evidence for treatment in humans and does not make KPV interchangeable with α-MSH or other melanocortin peptides.
