Kisspeptin-10: differences in hormonal response in men and women

Evidence level: Human physiological research, approximately four to five participants per group · Publication year: 2011
This overview discusses one original scientific publication on Kisspeptin-10. The source is included in PubMed, the literature database of the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
What was studied?
Researchers compared hormonal responses to kisspeptin-10 in healthy men and women. In women, the phase of the menstrual cycle was also taken into account.
What did the researchers find?
LH and FSH increased in men and in women during the preovulatory phase. During the follicular phase, no comparable gonadotropin response was found under the conditions studied.
What are the limitations?
The groups were small. The results show that the response is context-dependent; they do not prove a general effect on libido or fertility.
Significance for research
This study is relevant to distinguishing between peptide identity, biological context, and the selected endpoint.
