KPV and airway epithelium: NF-κB and inflammatory markers in cell culture

Level of evidence: Cell study
Research question
Does KPV affect inflammatory signals in bronchial epithelial cells? This study examines a different tissue model than the previously described intestinal studies.
Study model
Inflammatory responses were induced in an immortalized human bronchial cell line. The researchers measured, among other things, NF-κB signaling, MMP-9 activity, and the secretion of IL-8 and eotaxin.
What was found?
In this model, KPV reduced the measured NF-κB activity, MMP-9 activity, and certain inflammatory signals. Another melanocortin compound was also investigated.
Limitations and interpretation
Human cells in a laboratory are not a clinical trial in humans. The findings do not prove efficacy for asthma or other respiratory diseases. Effects of the other compound investigated must not automatically be attributed to KPV.
