Evidence level: Mechanistic mitochondrial research · Publication year: 2014

This overview discusses one original scientific publication on SS-31. The source is included in PubMed, the literature database of the U.S. National Library of Medicine.

What was studied?

The study investigated the interaction between SS-31, cardiolipin, and cytochrome c. These molecules are involved in the inner membrane of mitochondria and the transfer of electrons.

What did the researchers find?

SS-31 bound to cardiolipin and inhibited the peroxidase activity of the cytochrome c/cardiolipin complex. In the systems studied, beneficial changes in electron transport and oxygen consumption were found.

What are the limitations?

A biochemical mechanism does not prove that the same effects are clinically relevant in all diseases or in healthy people. The preparation studied is not automatically equivalent to every commercial product.

Significance for research

This publication helps explain why cardiolipin is a specific research target for SS-31.
