Evidence level: Laboratory research

Research question

How does biofilm prevention differ between natural and engineered antimicrobial peptides? This study compares LL-37 with WLBU2 and antibiotics.

Research model

The researchers compared multiple antimicrobial substances against ESKAPE pathogens. They investigated biofilm prevention under experimental conditions, including concentrations below the minimum inhibitory concentration.

What was found?

LL-37 showed inhibition of biofilm formation and an adhesion-related gene response in the Pseudomonas model studied. The results differed between compounds and test conditions. The strongest effects from the overall review cannot automatically be attributed to LL-37.

Limitations and interpretation

This is not a clinical comparative study. Laboratory findings do not prove that LL-37 can replace antibiotics. A result for one bacterial species must not be generalized to all ESKAPE pathogens.
