VIP in COVID: the primary outcome remains decisive

Study design: Humans; randomized study with 60-day follow-up

The research question

Some studies attract attention because of favorable subgroup results. For a careful assessment, it is important to first examine the outcome the study was designed to evaluate in advance.

What was found?

This study investigated intravenous aviptadil in severe COVID-related breathing problems. The primary outcome, being alive without respiratory failure on day 60, did not improve significantly from a statistical standpoint. The publication also contains favorable secondary or subgroup findings.

What does this evidence mean?

A secondary signal may justify further research, but it does not turn a non-significant primary outcome into convincing evidence. Discuss this publication together with TESICO. Both concern acute severe COVID and do not prove efficacy for long COVID.
